Seishin Karate Nashville is a ‘karate first’ dojo that centers on traditional karate practice, while also rounding our capabilities with other martial traditions.

Traditional Karate is founded on three pillars that are at the heart of our practice at Seishin Karate. These make up roughly 2/3rds of our training and are:

  • kihon (basics): practice of the core strikes, kicks and blocks.

  • kata (traditional forms): multiple techniques in series that build mastery

  • kumite (sparring): controlled fighting at increasing levels of challenge based on age and ability

In addition, Seishin Karate recognizes that modern martial arts practitioners benefit from incorporating other martial arts into their practice. Techniques from boxing/muay thai and wrestling/jiu-jitsu round out the remaining 1/3 of our training. Ultimately, martial arts practitioners like to hit things—mostly pads—because it provides satisfying feedback on our technique, and an ‘all around’ approach allows for this.

Little Tigers & Kids

Students in the Little Tigers (4-7) and Kids (7-12) classes will use the three pillars of Traditional Karate to build confidence, focus, stamina, and physical coordination. They will receive direct feedback on areas for improvement including: adjusting stances, improving techniques, and maintaining focus. Additionally, students will engage in ‘gamified’ sparring that allows students to build confidence in their abilities with a minimal risk of injury.

Sparring practice in the Little Tigers classes relies on safe one-on-one interactions such as “shoulder & knee touch” sparring. Little Tigers do not strike directly at each other.

Kids’ sparring also primarily utilizes games that minimize injury risk while also allowing for students to receive feedback as to where their hand and footwork needs to improve. This includes Traditional Karate’s Three-Step Sparring, open-handed touch sparring, and grappling from the knees.

Teens & Adults

The Teens’ & Adults’ class accommodates students who are continuing from the Kids’ Class, students who began their training elsewhere, and beginners. Seishin Karate believes that modern martial arts training is appropriate for students of every ability as long as they are willing to work hard.

This class is also founded on the three pillars of Traditional Karate, but goes further in incorporating practical and sparring techniques from other disciplines. Physical fitness is emphasized and techniques are pressure tested on pads and in a controlled, free-sparring environment.

Teens and adults looking to improve their fitness, martial abilities, and confidence in a friendly and appropriately-competitive environment will enjoy this training.
